Court Marriage — Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a court marriage take in Delhi?
Under the Special Marriage Act, the notice is displayed for 30 days for objections. The marriage can then be solemnised, and must take place within three months of the notice. In practice the process takes about one to two months.
What documents are needed?
Usually proof of age, proof of address, passport-size photographs, affidavits about marital status, and three witnesses with their identity documents. Divorce decrees or death certificates are needed where applicable.
Can a marriage be registered without the 30-day notice?
If the couple has already married by Hindu rites, the marriage can be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act without the 30-day notice period that applies to a fresh court marriage.
